What it teaches
The port ranges (well-known, registered, dynamic), TCP vs UDP, the default ports of 30 common protocols (SSH 22, DNS 53, HTTPS 443, SMB 445, RDP 3389...), which encrypted protocol replaces each clear-text one (Telnet → SSH, LDAP → LDAPS, IMAP → IMAPS), which protocols really run over UDP, and short firewall and troubleshooting scenarios. It also clears up the classic traps: SFTP is 22 not 115, 465 vs 587 for sending mail. The AI asks 3 questions, places you, shows a short card per module, then asks one port or protocol at a time.
Default ports only (any service can be moved to another port). No claims about what any certification exam asks.
How long
50 items. About 25-50 rounds (about 25 for a student who knows some ports, about 50 for a beginner) plus a 12-item final: 2 sessions (estimate, not timed with a real student). The tutor gives a one-line save code at the end of each session.
The modules
4 modules, drilled one item at a time.

Ports, ranges and TCP vs UDP
Concept questions
- M1
Port → protocol
Name the protocol for a port
- M2
Protocol → port
Give the port for a protocol
- M3
Secure versions, TCP or UDP, and scenarios
Secure versions, TCP or UDP, and short scenarios
Before it teaches, it asks
- 1What are you learning ports for (a certification, a help-desk job, a home lab, security work), and which ports do you already know?
- 2What is the default port for HTTP? (Web pages, unencrypted.)
- 3Which protocol uses port 3389 by default?
What’s exact, and what isn’t

Straight from the course’s own notes.
- Checked by script against the official registry
- Every port key comes from one table, and every row of it is checked against the 69 rows of IANA’s port registry the course uses (downloaded 2026-10-10, all 69 still in the live file). Which protocols count as encrypted is checked against IANA’s own descriptions (TLS/SSL, Secure Shell). Which transport each protocol is listed with comes from Wikipedia’s port list (IANA registers most ports for both TCP and UDP, so it can’t answer that); all 21 entries matched the page. A planted-error test (7 errors) was caught.
- Sourced
- Port ranges from RFC 6335, TCP and UDP from RFC 9293 and RFC 768, 465 vs 587 from RFC 8314. Short quotes matched word for word on the live pages (re-checked 2026-10-11).
